SUMMARY
Tiernan is a 17 year old girl whose parents are a movie star executive (I honestly don’t know) and a movie star. Her dad discovered he had cancer and so he and her mom decided to off themselves. While Tiernan is home from her boarding school. While she is down the hall in her bedroom. Without leaving her a note.
Her parents were really shitty parents. Basically, she didn’t exist to them. She would be in a room talking to them and they wouldn’t acknowledge her and then they'd just leave. She had a nanny/her mom’s assistant Miari who was the only one who showed her any attention or love.
So she’s basically fucked up in the head.
After her parents die, she gets a call from a dude named Jake. Jake says he is her dad’s stepbrother and that her parents left Tiernan to him in their will. He understands if she doesn’t want to come to Colorado because she is almost 18 and she has enough money and resources to take care of herself. But for reasons she doesn’t fully understand, she wants to go.
Jake and her dad (whose name I can’t remember) only met each other when they were teenagers when their parents got together. Jake left shortly after he turned 18 when some shit with his family went down (basically he fell in love with someone that was a lower class, his family paid her to go away, and then she committed suicide). I don’t think Tiernan ever met him. He now lives in Colorado, way up in the mountains, has a business making BMX and dirt bikes (and probably other things but I don’t remember and it's not that important). He lives with his two adult sons - Noah and Kaleb.
Noah is a very unhappy soul. He feels stuck on the mountain, wants to leave and race bikes, but his dad won’t support that. He tries to cope by being a complete man whore.
Kaleb is fucked up royally. When he was four, his druggie deadbeat mom went to a drug party (or something) and locked him in the car. He was unable to get out or get help. Until like 4 days later, when the police and his dad finally showed up. The mom went to prison for this. And Kaleb hasn’t spoken a single word since. He is also violent, slightly odd, and gives off a rapey feel. This could be because the first time he met Tiernan in the garage, he attempted to have his way with her, even though she said no. Repeatedly. Noah showed up and stopped him.
Jake is also a man whore (actually all 3 of them are) and he doesn’t cope well with his feelings either.
They all need a good therapist and some medication.
Speaking of needing therapy and medication, Tiernan also needs some. Because of her parents' wonderful parenting, she basically doesn’t talk either. One word answers, preferring to not say anything because she doesn’t think people will listen anyways.
Basically, a house full of dysfunctional people.
Lots of questionable things happen:
Tiernan meets some people from the town. One of them, Terrance, tries to hook up with her but is stopped by Noah and Kaleb. They tell her to stay away from him.
While in town at a bar, Terrance starts harassing Tiernan. Noah and Kaleb pull her away from him. Kaleb starts a fight. Then while they were leaving, he runs over some of their bikes. Luckily for Kaleb, winter is here, and now they are snowed in at their place up the mountain. No one can come in or out.Tiernan loses her virginity to Jake (Yes, as in step uncle Jake) in his pickup truck. They have sex lots of times.
When Jake leaves to go to the fishing cabin for a few days, Tiernan then has sex with Noah AND Kaleb at the same time.
While Jake is gone, there is a fire in one of the barns. They don’t think it was accidental.
Tiernan ends up hooking up with Kaleb more than once. But he gets all possessive over her (even though he already shared her with his brother). One night, he goes into her room, and starts having sex with her, but he gets really rough, she tells him to stop but he doesn’t. From his POV, he says he wants to hurt her. After that, Kaleb ends up taking off and was gone for months. Tiernan and Noah eventually go find him at the fishing cabin and bring him home.
Tiernan tells Kaleb she is in love with him … WHAT? … and they have a 3 month relationship.
When the snow melts and they go into town for the first time in like 6 months, Tiernan and Kaleb see Kaleb’s old exgf, who is very much pregnant. This upsets Tiernan (because she thinks it's Kalebs, but it's not) and over a series of really bad communication and shit that happens (like they find out Terrance is the one who set the fire to their barn) she ends up flying home to California with Miari.
Six weeks later, she is still in California and she is sitting on the beach when Noah shows up. He followed her to Cali but just wanted some time alone. He got sponsored by some BMX people which is what he wanted. She invites him to come stay at her house and when she gets home, Jake is there arguing with Miari. She looks out her window and sees a new tire swing hanging from a tree. She goes out there and Kaleb is there. And he TALKS to her. He tells her he is sorry and that his home is wherever she is. He has spent the last six weeks in the fishing cabin reading out loud, practicing talking.
Skips to five years later - Tiernan and Kaleb have a son, Griffin. They have moved back home to the mountain from Seattle. Jake is now working with the company that sponsored Noah and Noah is still racing with them. Jake spends half of his time in California, and the other half in Colorado.
Jake and Miari are “secretly” hooking up - meaning they think they are being secretive but everyone knows better.
