Meet Feyre. She is the daughter of a merchant who lost all of his money and now they’re poor. Kind of like a Schitts Creek situation. She has two sisters - Nesta and Elain. Feyre is the youngest but she definitely gets treated like a middle, red-headed, step-sister. Her dad got injured when people came to take their money and stuff. Now he refuses to work or help and they live in a cottage and are basically starving/freezing to death. Feyre has taught herself how to hunt and goes out to gather food.
One day - she sees a wolf. But she knows this isn’t an ordinary wolf. She knows its a Fae but guess what? She hates the Fae because she thinks they are the reason the humans have it so rough on this side of the wall. So she kills it.
Fast forward - their door gets broken down by a dumbass… I mean Tamlin. Tamlin is all like "WHO KILLED MY WOLF FRIEND?!" And Feyre’s like "Me Bitch I ain’t scared". So he decides that since she is a young pretty thing he isn’t going to kill her but her “punishment” is to go live in his mansion on the OTHER side of the wall. So she goes.
Lucien is Tamlins friend and does not like Feyre because she killed the wolf guy. For reasons, he tells her how to trap a Suriel. She does, and is successful, and he tells her to stay with the High Lord. Unfortunately he didn't specify which one...
Fast way forward because this book is the worst to Calanmai. Festival with lots of dancing, bonfires, and general debauchery. Three Fae asshats decide to try and mess with Feyre when she is saved by “the most beautiful male” she has ever seen. And he says “There you are, I’ve been looking for you, thank you for finding her for me” and we all collectively swoon….but not until the end of book 2 because we don’t know yet.
Fast forward again, because Tamlin - ew -, he sends her back home and she finds out that he has set her family up with money and her dad a new job and everything is just peachy keen because they have money again. She is upset because for some unknown reason she loves Tamlin so she goes back to find him. She gets to the Spring Court and Tam isn’t there, Tree Lady tells her that he has been taken Under The Mountain and Feyre can't go there because she is a human. But also, if she goes, don’t drink the wine. So of course she goes. Gets captured by the Attor. Gets taken to the throne room where Amarantha is sitting with Tamlin who acts like he doesn’t know/care about her. She gets beaten pretty badly but Lucien shows up in her cell and heals her.
Amarantha says if you can solve my riddle I will let everyone go or you can compete in 3 tasks over 3 months and maybe I’ll let you go then. So first task - has to defeat a Wrym. She does. She then takes a bone and throws it Amaranthas feet as a FUCK you. Her arm is broken, she is covered in Wrym poop. Rhysand comes to her cell, agrees to heal her if she will make a bargain with him (spend one week a month with him). She is basically forced to if she wants to live. Also, he was a wee bit of a dick about it (but we ignore that). Anyways, task 2 she has to read something, if she doesn’t, her and Lucien both die. But luckily, our main man helps her out because she can’t read.
Third task is kill some Fae people. The last one is Tamlin. And she stabs him in the heart because this is confusing, something about he doesn’t have one? I don’t know. Anyways, not important. Amarantha gets pissed and snaps her neck but not before she says the answer to the riddle, and if you have read Harry Potter, you know the answer (LOVE!). Tamlin kills Amarantha and Rhys convinces all 7 (7….another HP reference) high lords to give a wisp of life to bring Feyre back. They do but she is broken…emotionally and mentally.
At the end of the book, Rhys gives a little tug on their bond and she goes to find him. He tells her bye and right before he leaves, he looks at her and jolts, and she's like WTF is wrong and he disapparates (ok...winnows). So her and Tam-Tam go home to the Spring Court to live Happily Ever After……
