Maggie gets gifted a tracking spell from Maestro and implies she will hunt Carl down and kill him and Donut.
Meadow Lark Party - Brandon An and Chris Andrews (brothers), Yolanda Martinez, and Imani C who were all working in a nursing home and had evacuated it due a fire that Agatha (homeless lady with a shopping cart) had started.
Odette - Host of “Dungeon Crawler After Hours with Odette”. Used to be a crawler, was human-ish until she lost her legs in a battle. Now she uses crab legs to get around on her show or a little moving platform. Wears a weird get up for her show, Carl describes her as a “naked crab-taur wearing a bug mask”. Was Mordecai’s trainer when he was in the Dungeon. Appears to be on Carl and Donut’s side.

There are six main bosses: Neighborhood Boss (who drop Neighborhood Maps), Borough Boss, City Boss, Province Boss, Country Boss, and Floor Boss. Once you get to the 3rd floor, you have Elites.
Carl and Donut's Rewards - Floor 1
Carl | Donut |
Goblin Pass - that became a tattoo on Carl’s forearm. Allows him to pass by safely through goblins. | Tome of Magic Missile - A tome will permanently teach you how to do a spell so now Donut can shoot missiles. |
Enchanted Nightgaunt Cloak of Stoutness - Gains 4 points of Constitution and becomes resistant to poison and ice attacks. Anti-piercing to all worn armor. | Enchanted Crown of the Sepsis Whore - +5 Intelligence, increases her Good First Impression skill, and all magical attacks have a 15% chance of inflicting Sepsis. BUT - the crown now places her in the succession line for the Blood Sultanate on the ninth floor. Even if she takes the crown off (which if she does it will crumble to dust and then reappear someone else in the dungeon), she will still be in the line, which means she will have to kill everyone else in the line to be able to descend to the 10th floor. |
Enchanted Trollskin Shirt of Pummelling - 7 points to Regeneration skill. Stun, Knockback, Disarm, and Out of Breath attacks are voided. | Talisman of the Slate Butterfly - Adds 4 points to Light on your feet, 1 to Intelligence, winged fairies won’t be hostile towards you. |
Enchanted Toe Ring of Splatter Skunk - Adds 3 points to Strength and 3 points to “powerful strike” skill. (Again, Carl has no shoes. Also, the game AI kinda has a foot fetish). | Torch spell - Conjures a light that follows her around. |
Tome of Wisp Armor - protects against magic based attacks. | Desperado Pass - Negates the ability to obtain a Vanquisher pass (whatever that means). |
Enchanted Spiked Kneepads - 10% Damage reflects all armor, cancels momentum-based attacks. | Enchanted Fae Scale Quadruped Crupper of the Fleet - +2 Dexterity. Strong Fae made armor. |
Enchanted War Gauntlet of the Exalted Grull - a wrist brace that transforms into a spiked war gauntlet when the hand is made into a fist. | Minion Army tome - Hostile enemies will fight with you instead of against you. |
Puddle Jumper - Transport herself and up to 3 others to somewhere else within her line of sight. |
Carl and Donut's Rewards - Floor 2
Carl | Donut |
Goo-Inator 3000 - shaping tool that can be used at a workbench. | Dungeon Book of the Floor Club - each level she will get a new spellbook. |
Desperado Club Drink Ticket x3 | Second Chance spell - raises a monster from the dead and will fight for her, not against her. |
Enchanted Pedicure Kit of the Sylph - The AI showing its foot fetish again. There are 12 items in the kit and if he uses them it increases damage to bare foot attacks by 15% for 30 hours. Adds to his smush skill for 30 hours. Unbreakable buff will keep his toes unbroken for 30 hours. Gives him an alarm and a 5 second delay before any traps go off that he steps into. | Enchanted Fur Brush of the Ecclesiastic - brushing for 10 minutes a night, +2 points to Constitution for 30 hours. |
Enchanted BigBoi Boxers - Adds 2 to Constitution. He may cast a Protective Shell once every 30 hours. | Dungeon Gold Rush - Basically a lottery ticket. Depending on what you scratched off, it could be good, or bad. |
Dungeon Gold Rush - A lottery ticket similar to what Donut got except Carl only gets two options - Fireball or Custard. Fireball will kill a mob but Custard will heal them.
Gorgon Marital Aid - hardening and dehardening tool, may only be used at a workbench.
Proximity Trigger - Using a Sapper’s table, this trigger can be attached to any non-static trap. |
Crawler count at start of Dungeon: over 12 million.
Crawler count at the end of the book, along with Carl and Donut's stats, are at the end of the summary.
The series starts with Carl waking up in the middle of the night to have a cigarette. He goes to the window and opens it because his (ex) girl-friend, Bea, doesn’t like the smell so he doesn’t want to stink up the apartment. She is currently on a girls trip to Bahamas and Carl saw a picture of her on social media sitting on her ex-boyfriend's lap. Carl is planning on taking her cat, Donut, and leaving her. He knows he probably won’t be able to keep Donut but it's worth a shot. He claims he's doing it piss off Bea but actually it's because he’s become attached to Donut.
As he opens the window, Donut jumps out onto a tree. She has never done this before and Carl is trying to get her back inside but she starts meowing really loudly and won’t move. Carl is in a t-shirt and his boxers, so he throws on a leather jacket and jams his feet into the shoes by the door - which happen to be Bea’s pink crocs (so they’re too small). Not a great choice seeing as its winter and it's currently cold enough to get frostbite in minutes.
He goes outside and is trying to get Donut to jump down but she’s making such a racket that their downstairs neighbor opens the window and sticks her head out to ask WTF is going on.
That’s when Carl’s whole world changes.
Every single building/car is just smashed. (I pictured it as if you make a playdoh tower and then just smash it with your palm). His neighbor’s head rolls towards his feet. Donut eventually jumps down into Carl’s arm.
A loudspeaker announces that the planet has just been taken over by an alien race and they are harvesting the minerals. There are two options for survival - you can stay above ground and attempt to survive on your own in the frigid temperatures with no structures around you. Or you can go down a staircase into the World Dungeon that will appear soon.
Carl really doesn’t know what awaits him down the stairs but he has no other option. He’s in his boxers, too small of crocs, with a cat - he can’t survive 15 minutes in these temperatures yet alone for the unforeseeable future.
So Carl and Donut go down the stairs.
The Dungeon is put on by the Borant Corporation. The dominant species of that system is the Kua-Tin. There are 18 floors and if you get all the way to the 18th floor, then they tell you that you “gain control of the world”.
Carl immediately starts getting notifications popping up in front of his face. He can close them by mentally focusing on the X. He can hear announcements directly in his mind or being announced overhead. There’s a map that he can (eventually) see if someone is coming towards him. There’s a menu where he can see his stats including his health bar, his levels in certain areas (like charisma and constitution), his achievements, inventory, chat, and his reward boxes. One of the best things about this book is the reward box descriptions - they are hilarious. Since he went down with Donut, they are now in a party of 2, so he can also see all of Donut’s stuff.
He immediately gets into a fight with some goblin and loses his crocs.
Everyone/thing Carl encounters a little info box will pop up, letting him know the race and what level the thing is at. In this game there are things that want to kill you and then things that don’t and those things are called Non Combatant NPC. As he defeats things, he levels up and gets more reward boxes. If he happens to kill a fellow crawler, he would get a skull by his name. If he kills a neighborhood boss, he gets a star. The more he kills, the more he levels up. Which means he becomes stronger and more competent.
He finds a tutorial guild but he can’t get in because of the goblin mob that’s chasing him. He defeats them and is allowed access. His guildmaster is Mordecai.
Let's discuss Mordecai. He came into the Dungeon as a SkyFowl but once you get to level 3, you get to pick your race and he picked Changeling. So every time there’s a new game, he changes form. He says it made it all the way to level 11 and was given options to leave the dungeon. Once you get to the 10th floor, you start getting options to leave, the longer you stay, the better your choices. Mordecai says most crawlers don’t make it past the 10th floor. (Right before Carl leaves, Mordecai tells him “its not worth it. No matter what they tell you. Not until floor 12, and even then, negotiate as much as you can.”) He stays as a tutorial guild until after the third floor collapses, then he works in a magic guild. Mordecai tells Carl that each dungeon is built for the world they invade. The dungeon, and the tutorial guilds, know a lot about Earth because they have studied it. It’s why the game AI system that’s constantly popping up with notifications will reference pop culture - to make it easier for the humans.
Mordecai goes on to say that Borant makes a lot of money off of the game. The Syndicate has over 3 billion star systems and every season a new Dungeon Crawler comes out. Everyone across the universe watches. And you want to have a lot of fans, the more fans, the more followers, the more views, the better your prize boxes. The more followers, the more likely you’ll get sponsored by someone and get better prize boxes. But most of this stuff that won’t even come into play until later - the followers, views and stuff on the 2nd floor. And the sponsors even later.
Mordecai explains that Borant, the one who is running the game this season, doesn’t like to be trash talked so watch how you talk about them. He also tells him that this is his last season. After this, he becomes a full citizen (of where I don’t know) and can leave the dungeon but he cannot go home.
Mordecai shows Carl how to access all of his menus. Carl also has access to healing spells and potions to help him if he got injured but if he dies, he dies. As they’re looking at all of this, there’s an announcement that the staircases have been closed, and over 12 million humans have entered the dungeon, but already they are down to 10 million. Carl asks Mordecai about finishing the dungeon, and getting out after the 18th floor. Moredaci tells him no one has ever made it past the 13th floor.
He goes on to show Carl on his inventory works. If Carl can pick it up for 4 seconds, he can shove it into his inventory and its always there (just like a video game).
One of the items in one of Carl’s prize boxes is an Enhanced Pet Biscuit. Moredaci tells him to give it to Donut now. There’s a whole bunch of effects it can have but if it turns her into something that will attack him, it will transport her out of the safe area. Carl is thinking about whether or not to give it to her (and how exactly is he going to keep a cat safe?), when Donut jumps up and takes it right out of his hand. She immediately turns into a pile of goo, Carl freaks out, but Moredaci says she is just transforming.
Donut wakes up and now she can talk. And it’s glorious. She also, thanks to the biscuit she ate, has higher stats than Carl, so she’s the party leader. She changes the party name to “The Royal Court of Princess Donut” and changes Carl’s title to “Royal Bodyguard”.
When they leave Mordecais, they have 4 days and 20 hours until they need to find the second floor staircase. Mordecai told them to roam around, killing things, gaining experience, and leveling up. So that’s what they do.
Donut’s charisma is high so she can basically sweet talk anyone into doing what she wants. Armed with that and Carl’s goblin patch, they approach some goblins and ask them to build a type of vehicle for them. Carl tries to start bartering with them and they are not on board until he pulls out a package of meth he took off another mob. That does the trick. He tells them he will tell them where he got it, if he they build him transportation.
They make him a Chopper, kinda like a motorcycle … thing. Show him how to run it, and give him coal for fuel.
Once that’s done, Carl tells them he got the meth off some llamas. All the goblins take off to go start a war with them basically. Carl and Donut start looting everything in their chamber that they can. And then they decided, might as well kill the Goblin chief and get some extra points. So Carl builds a bomb type thing and wheels it into the room. Donut tells him AFTER he hits the explode button that there were a lot of goblin babies in there too.
They hit up a safe room to spend the night and when they wake up, Donut notices another blue (meaning Crawler) dot in the bathroom. Crawler Frank Q. They know Frank’s name because they recently stumbled upon another crawler, and her info box indicated she was killed by Frank.
Frank tries to give them some bullshit story but Carl doesn’t buy it. Another crawler, Maggie My, tries to sneak out of the bathroom but those two don’t seem to know that if you attack someone in a safe area, you get frozen if you’re a crawler, ejected if its a monster. They freeze and Carl and Donut get away. Carl wants to just get away from them as quickly as possible because between the two of them, their info boxes say they have killed 8 other crawlers. Donut thinks they should do something or they might hurt someone else. So they plant a trap of explosives, thinking that will take them out.
With 47 hours until the floor collapses, they start seeing spray painted messages on the walls indicating other humans were close by. They find a stairwell but there’s something big guarding it.
They find the group of humans and it turns out to be a bunch of elderly people from a nursing home, along with 4 younger people, and a homeless lady with a shopping cart.
Brandon An and Chris Andrews (brothers), Yolanda Martinez, and Imani C all work at a nursing home and Agatha (homeless lady) started a fire so they had all evacuated when the buildings collapsed. Brandon said there were 250 residents plus firefighters, EMTs, and a doctor. Everyone else is dead, except for them, and about 35 residents.
Brandon’s plan is to get all of the old people down to the third floor where they can pick their class/race and hopefully it will restore their strength and minds (a lot of them have dementia).
Carl and Donut decide to help Brandon get these old people down to the second floor. They go around and defeat mobs, and a boss, to help clear the path for Brandon to get the old people to another safe room. Then they decide to go check out what’s guarding the staircase.
It’s a Borough Boss. Carl is really good at building things and making bombs with stuff he has looted so with the help of the 4 caregivers (and Agatha sneaks in), they manage to defeat the boss and open up the stairway. Carl and Donut decide to go down first and clear a way to the first safe room for Brandon and his group.
Well that’s the plan, but they end up transported onto a boat on Earth’s surface, and are going to go on a TV show called “Dungeon Crawler After Hours with Odette”.
Donut knows how to work a crowd and she has everyone in the crowd wrapped around her little paw by the end of the show. After, Odette wants to talk to Carl and Donut alone. She says she was Mordecai’s trainer (she was a previous crawler but struck a deal on the 12th floor), and she knows this is his last season, and she wants him to seek her out when hes done. She also offers them some advice and Carl asks what’s in it for her and she said her audience loves them, and they make her money, and she loves money.
They eventually make it to the second level and clear a path to the safe room. Brandon brings his lot down as the recap episode starts airing. It notifies them that there are only 1.2 million crawlers left in the game.
Most of Brandon’s elderly people had decided to stay upstairs in a safe room when the floor collapsed. Being in a safe room when the floor collapses doesn’t keep them safe though - they still died.
As they are watching the recap, they are being shown defeating the last boss before going down the stairs. Chris notices that Agatha was edited out of the scene, like she was never there. She also had went down the stairs before anybody else and no one has seen her since.
Views, followers, and favorites turn on after the recap episode. By the next day Carl and Donut have 69 billion views, 635 million followers, and 149 million favorites. Brandon and co. have decided to go down the staircase as soon as possible. He doesn’t want to have to worry about the old people anymore, and on the 3rd floor, he’s hoping they can all pick their stuff and be helpful and not hindering. Carl and Donut go out to clear a path to the staircase that has already appeared.
They kill some members of a mob and collect 25 jugs of moonshine, which is highly flammable. Carl takes these and makes his own version of a Molotov Cocktail and the game names it after him (Carl’s Jug O’ Boom). His achievement tells him later that for every kill made by his invention by other crawlers, he will get 1 gold coin, even in future seasons.
They fight and kill a neighborhood boss and get the map.
They head to a guild to see Mordecai and he tells them that a kua-tin wants to speak with them (a rep from the Borant Corp). Her name is Zev and she’s a dungeon admin. Zev will basically be their agent - because they’re super popular - aka controlling their appearances on shows. She tells them that Odette has already contracted them and that they will appear on at least one other show per floor, maybe more as they advance. Carl gets super pissed and kinda yells at her (which is a big no-no) and shockingly, she agrees with him. She tells him she isn’t a “member of the party” but her boss is. No one is here because they want to. Everyone is afraid. If she does something wrong, her and her whole family will die. The mobs are terrified of the crawlers because they know they are there to kill them. But she is on their side. She wants them to do well, to live, because the better they do, it’s better for her.
Carl relaxes and Donut remarks about how this is like a scene from Gossip Girl. Carl is shocked to find out that Moredecai has watched it and so has Zev. Zev and Donut bond over their love of TV shows and start talking which gives Mordecai and Carl a chance to talk without anyone listening (they cut the feeds when Zev arrived).
Mordecai tells him the “party” is a political party called the Bloom. He compares it to the Nazis. They control the whole Borant government and have run it into the ground. They are bankrupt and they are using the game to get money. They need the game to end fast so they can get access to the funds.
Donut and Carl contact Brandon over chat and tell him they need to move them to the staircase now. Brandon and Chris have made a parade type float thing for all the old people with scraps and they’re using it to pull all of them to the stairs. Carl realizes Zev is watching him and can communicate via chat. She is talking about his viewers when she yells, “Oh shit, oh fuck. Carl, Donut. Run. Run to the safe room now.”
There has been a rule in the dungeon - no peeing/pooping out of the bathroom. But people weren’t listening so they had to create a punishment. Now if you do, it creates this monster type thing, a Rage Elemental, that comes and kills you immediately.
Remember how a lot of these old people have dementia? One of them, Jack, decides to stand up on the float and just start peeing at the wall.
The Rage thing immediately kills Yolanda (one of the caregivers) and another patient, Randall. Everyone else makes it to the safe room but now they are trapped.
It takes a few hours, okay more than a few, but Carl comes up with a plan. Using his chopper he got from the Goblins, they built some contraption that could fling off bombs at the Rage thing. Him and Donut are the bait. They lead the Rage to the stairs. One of the goblins had told Carl that if the mobs attempt to go down the stairs, they die. They destroy their chopper, and use a lot of bombs, but they manage to trick the Rage into falling down the stairs and it dies.
Brandon and company (36 residents left, 3 caregivers) go down the stairs but Carl and Donut still have 4 days, so they stay on the second floor.
Carl and Donut get to the safe room and get a message from someone named Mukta. She says that Zev is in a time out but she will return. Mukta says she overrode Zev’s original pick of a show to something else and that they will be transported in 10 minutes.
The shows host, Maestro, is an asshole. Carl really pisses him off when he helps two other crawlers who are on the show. He says he is royalty and if Carl makes it to the 9th floor, he will learn all about his family, Skull Clan. Carl wants to know if Maestro will be on the 9th floor, if so, he can’t wait to kick his ass.
Maestro has two surprise guests for Carl - Frank Q and Maggie My. Maestro plays a video for his audience and Carl realizes there was a teenage girl with them (Maggies daughter). When they chased after Carl and Donut, they stumbled upon Carl’s explosives. The teenage girl got hurt, Maggie killed her. Maggie blames Carl for her death and swears she will find Carl and kill him.
Maestro gives gifts to his guests before they leave. He gives Carl a pair of boots (which he does not plan on wearing because again, the AI loves his feet). He gave Frank and Maggie a potion that will allow them to search for any Crawler’s name and find exactly where they are on the map.
Carl basically tells Maestro to fuck off and he can’t wait to see him on the ninth floor.
After the next recap episode, the crawler count is now less than 1 million.
Zev shows up after the episode and tells them that Maestro is a Prince of the Skull Empire. Him and his brother run the show. She tells them that “Pork Boy Snick” has gone viral. Carl is like wtf are you talking about. She asks him if he knows what fan fiction is. So a snick is like …. This book was written in 2020 and so AI prompt videos weren’t around but now that they are … a snick is like if someone put into a prompt into one of those AI video things and said something like… show Maestro getting fucked by Carl. She said its gotten so popular because its so real looking, and Carl has to deny that he fucked an orc. Zev tells them that the Skull Empire hasn’t responded yet but now everyone is calling the Prince, “Pork boy” and “Carls naughty little piggie”. Pissing off the Skull Empire has made the Party happy with Carl.
Carl and Donut find the boss of the Kobold mob. Where they realize they are participating in animal fighting. There are a bunch of dingos in cages and Carl feeds them all biscuits and turns them on his side. Once the boss comes out, he’s like this little gerbil thing, he releases all the dingos but they are now on Carl’s side.
By defeating the boss, they are rewarded with one of the animals in cages. Donut picks and its a “chicken dinosaur thing with pink, downy feathers”, called a Mongoliensis. Carl doesn’t want it but Donut begs and thats what they get. She calls him Mongo. And he’s a little shit. Their only hope is getting him to bond with Donut so that he becomes attached to her and will fight for her and not attack her.
For freeing the dingos and saving them, Carl gets a new achievement of PETA Enthusiast! The description says, “The ghost of Steve Irwin smiles down upon you.” And his reward? “I SAID THE GHOST OF STEVE IRWIN SMILES DOWN UPON YOU.”
They go back to Mordecai and he tells them he can’t do anything with them until Mongo’s dot on the map turns white (red means BAD, will attack; white means friendly; blue is a crawler). He also tells them that when they go down to the 3rd floor, they will immediately go to Mordecai and he will help them pick a class and a race.
The next day, Carl, Donut, and Mongo go out and keep killing mobs. Donut shows Mongo how to kill, which makes his dot turn white. They weren’t bonded yet, but making progress. Mord told them if he didn’t bond before the floor collapsed, Mongo wouldn’t be able to go down with them. So they work more at killing mobs and trying to teach him commands. Finally, Donut got his dot to turn orange - meaning he bonded.
Hanging out in a safe room by the stairs, Carl is looking at his inventory. He realizes he can organize by value. He has 3 things at the top of that list that he has never seen before.
“Trans Tunnel 7C Orator Relay by Valtay Corp,” “Valtay Perso-Shield Platinum Edition,” and “Mag 3040 Valtay Corp Pulse Pistol”. The first one has a warning that its not to be used in the dungeon and if he tries, he will be disqualified (aka killed). He is trying to figure out where he got them and then remembered that during the battle with the boss on the 1st floor to get to the stairs, Agatha had been there. He had picked up her shopping cart and put it into his inventory because it was in the way. He believes these items fell out when he did that. Just as he is thinking about this, another blue dot appears as someone comes towards the stairs. Its Agatha. She’s like oh you guys aren’t dead yet and she heads for the stairs. Carl wants her to wait a few minutes, he wants to talk to her about her shopping cart. Agatha looks at him and Carl swears her eyes are saying, “No, stop now”. Then he was like well your wheel is squeaky and mobs will hear her coming. She declines, says “Them critters already know I’m here. They just don’t know what to do about it,” and goes down the stairs.
Zev then messages and asks if they are okay, she said their feed went out for a few. Zev encourages them to go down the stairs and they will immediately be taken to Odette's show.
After the show, they have a chance to talk to her privately again, and Carl asks about the Valtay Corp. Odette says that they are a corporate system government and they are just waiting for Borant to fail so they can collect on their debt. They’re one of the most powerful entities in the universe and they get to run the next season.
Odette is also shocked they don’t know what creature Mongo is …. He’s a velociraptor.
Odette gives them one last piece of advice on choosing classes. But she warns them, it’ll make someone mad.
There’s a bonus chapter in the physical book but I will be putting that in its own summary. It appears there’s a bonus chapter in each book and it’s kind of like a side story that I think will eventually meet up with the main story but I think it deserves its own page.
