Four main characters who have all undergone emotional, physical, and psychological abuse. Azadeh is our FMC. Azadeh is an Iranian woman who immigrated to the States with her mom and siblings as a teenager. Her mom loved Iran but when the police captured Azadeh for not wearing her hijab and whipped her 74 times, her mom decided it was time to leave. 

When she was 15, on her first day at her new school, she was getting picked on by some girls for being different when Zeke stood up for her. He thought she was beautiful the first time he saw her and couldn’t just stand by while she was bullied. From that day on, they became best friends. They remained friends until they were 17, when they kissed for the first time. Zeke was always in love with Az and Az loved Zeke but didn’t want to be in a relationship.

Ezekiel (Zeke) Summers was the son of a preacher, who loved to beat the shit out of him. He confided in Azadeh, who would keep her window open so he could sneak in at night. Zeke came over a lot of dinner and Azadeh’s mother loved him. Azadeh decided to tell her mother about Zeke and his dad, and her mom said Zeke could sleep over if he needed to, but not in her bedroom. When Zeke was 17, his dad decided to scoop out his eyeball with a soup spoon. Zeke went to Az’s house, they took him to the hospital. When he was released, he went home and killed his dad (unsure about his mom, he said he tied her up, never specified what happened after that). Then spent the next two years in a psych ward. Where he met Cyrus Porter and Levinston (Lev) Cartwright. 

Cyrus had multiple scars on his entire body from his dad abusing him. He earned himself a stay in the psych ward by setting his house on fire while his parents were inside of it and watching them burn from the front yard. 

Lev’s mom was a psycho who liked to watch young children be abused. She would hold Lev down and make him watch too. He ended up killing his mom in her bedroom (that he now sleeps in). Because of his mom, he does not like to be touched by anyone.

Every Sunday while Zeke was in the psych ward, Az would come visit him and bring him a meal. Once he became close to Cyrus, Cyrus started joining them. One day, there was a commotion that ended with security guards holding down another patient (Lev). Az went over to help, managed to calm him down, and brought him back to the table to eat. From that point on, the four of them were together. When they got out of the psych ward, Lev took his family money and gutted out the manor he grew up in. Then all four of them moved in together. Because of Azadeh’s history, she has made it her life mission to help women in other countries escape abusive situations. When the book starts, she is getting ready to leave for a few months. The boys don’t want her to go, especially Lev, but she doesn’t care. She wants…no, needs to help these women. After three months of being gone, she returns. Not because she wants to, or her work was done, but because she found out that her baby sister, Mona, had been kidnapped. 

Lev was mad that Az hadn’t come home yet, he felt like she had been gone long enough, so he kidnapped Mona. Mona, not knowing it was Lev who kidnapped her, escaped only to get picked up by a group called SALT. SALT kidnaps and sells women and children. Az is FURIOUS at Lev. Lev (who is obviously fucked up psychologically) just needs her to be home so that he can feel whole again. They fight, Az tries to cut him, but Zeke and Cyrus hold her back. 

They find out that SALT is asking for ransom money in exchange for Mona. They go to their lair (for lack of a better term). Once they bring Mona out, Az and the guys just kill everyone there and then leave. 

Mona can’t believe that Lev was the one who kidnapped her to begin with. She told him that if he would have just told her that he wanted to kidnap Mona so that Az would come home, she would have done it willingly. 

After a few weeks, Mona goes back to college. While she was there, Lev and Zeke have been working on Lev’s touching issue. He has made a lot of progress and wants to show Cyrus and Az. 

There’s a big ole fuck fest. Zeke tells Az he doesn’t want her to leave anymore, he wants her to stay there and have babies with them. Az agrees. They all marry each other and the epilogue shows them 10 years later - they have a little girl, twin boys, and Az is pregnant again. She still helps women but she stays home and does behind the scenes stuff with an organization that they started.
