SUMMARY

This is book 2 of the Filthy Rich Fae. Book one can be found here.

TLDR: Lach searches for Cate. Cate tries to escape from Oberon and does so with the help of some witches. Cate gets a hold of Ciara, who tells Lach where she is. They reunite. Lach tells her (almost) everything, which is a lot. Ciara worked out a deal with the other creatures in NOLA for a spell to keep Lach hidden within the city from the Wild Hunt. It prevents other courts, and the WIld Hunt, from coming into the city. Lach tells Cate he believes she is the descendant of the princess of Terra Court (who is not his mother - long story). Her ring glamours her but now it won’t come off even if she wants it too. There are murders - first a werewolf, then a witch, then a human, then a vampire. Only one more creature, Fae, is needed to break the spell around NOLA. Baptiste (vampire) is the one behind all of this. She is in cahoots with Oberon and Shaw. 

Showdown at Baptiste place - Cate’s glamour gets taken away and they can see that she is Fae (and has wings). Lach begs Baptiste to kill him, not Cate. Shaw says no you don’t get to be the hero. He was in a bargain with Oberon to kill Lach but he regrets that now. Shaw shoots himself. Ciara takes out Baptiste. The wards have fallen. Cate tells Lach he has to go - the Wild Hunt is back on.

Lachlan goes to New York City to stay with Fiona and her witch girlfriend, Romy, to hide from the Wild Hunt with Romy’s protections. While there, he goes to see a vampire, Durant, for weapons. Lach travels there the normal way but then nips inside. Using his magic, it’s notified the Wild Hunt, and they show up. Durant and him fight them off and we learn that the Wild Hunt are Fae that are truly immortal. If they are killed, they regenerate (basically) and come back. Durant says he will drop them in the Hudson so they drown a couple times before they get back to land, it’ll slow them down. 

Meanwhile, Cate is at Oberon’s. He framed Bain and was working with MacAlister. MacAlister went rogue though, he wasn’t supposed to try and kill Cate. Oberon wants Lach to attack Bain’s court to start a war between courts. He also wants the Wild Hunt to take out Lach for him. Titania just wants to kill Cate and be done with it but Oberon says he knows what Lach wanted with the bargain, and he wants the same thing. He shows Cate what the OtherWorld really looks like - black, smells awful, their magic is cursed, chaotic, they need to stop it. There was a curse on the other magical creatures and it’s been lifted but now they need to fix their own magic. Oberon says there are older monsters and older gods that are going to wake up. He tells Cate about the Terra Court (which Lach has told Cate a little bit about - Lach is an heir of both the Terra and Nether Court). He says if it rises again, by Lach reclaiming that throne as well, the darkness that’s in the Otherworld will spread to Earth. Oberon says Fae has been looking for her ring for a long time. That it belonged to the penumbra of the Terra Court who disappeared a long time ago. Cate offers Oberon a deal - she will give him the ring but he has to leave the Nether Court, and all the inhabitants, alone. 

Cate spends the next day wandering around his mansion. She finds an office, full of books and journals, but all in the Fae language that she can’t read. Then she sees a little door that has a lock on it. She tries to pick the lock but then hears growling from behind it and decides to not mess with it, and leaves. 

Oberon goes to Cate’s room for the ring but she is unable to take it off. Everyone tries, they get zapped by a shock, and Cate physically cannot remove it. Oberon calls for some witches. When they arrive, they make their own bargain with Oberon. They will get the ring off, but he needs to free their friend. They examine the ring and says there’s an old binding spell on it, they cannot remove it. They said there is a way to get it off. If they perform a ritual over the next few days, then Oberon and Cate complete the handfasting, the spell will recognize Oberon as Cate since they will be married. Cate’s like absolutely not. 

Meanwhile, Lach is butting heads with Fiona and Romy. Romy is searching for a way out of this Memento Mori curse and she says she would have more magic if she wasn’t shielding everyone. He says please keep shielding Cate. Durant calls and tells Lach that Bain is at his club with a brunette. Lach assumes its Cate and nips there immediately. Bain is there, with a chick, but not Cate. Bain’s like I have no idea what you’re talking about but I want to kick your ass so he does. Fiona had called Ciara, who told Rorak, who nipped there. Bain didn’t kill Lach, but he tells Rorak to get him out of there. 

Back with Cate - Oberon says you might as well marry me … Lach is dead. Three days later, Cate has been mourning Lach (think Bella Swan in New Moon) while the witches have been performing the ritual on her every night. On the third night, the witches say it's almost done. They perform the handfasting with Cate and Oberon (where Oberon strongly implies they will be consummating the wedding later). The witches then tell Oberon the last part of the ritual, has to be done outside, with just females. Cate, Titania, and the two witches go outside. They all drink some potion and one of them chants. Titania collapses and then Cate goes down as well. When she wakes up a few minutes later, she is in Titania’s body. The witches tell her they are going to help her escape. They have been preparing her body to be able to complete this spell. They switch her clothes and Titania. Cate (who looks like Titania) calls the guards and tells them to take Titania (who looks like Cate) to her room. Cate does a very good job of acting like a bitch so they believe that she is Titania. She tells the guards to guard the room and she is taking the witches to Oberon to figure out what the fuck went wrong. They go into another room and the witches are like ok…let’s nip. Cate’s like that’s your bright idea? I can’t nip, I’m human. They’re like yeah, but in Titania’s body, with her magic. They show her a picture of a place and tell her to concentrate on that. She does…and shockingly it works. She nips them to Dublin. 

Two guards show up on the street and recognize Titania. Cate sends the witches away and tells the guards she needs a drink and a break from her brother. They agree and allow her to go into a local pub. Inside the pub, she tries to nip to Avalon but she doesn’t have enough magic left. In fact, her hair is starting to change back. She asks the bartender if she can borrow her phone and calls someone - they don’t answer but she leaves a voicemail… Just as the guards walk in. She is still dressed like Titania but now she looks like Cate again. She hides from them.

Is Lach really dead? Last we saw him he was getting his ass kicked by Bain and Oberon seems to think he’s dead. But luckily, he is not. Roark got him and took him back to Avalon. He’s been out for three days. They needed him subdued until they worked out a plan. Now that Lach is on the run from the Wild Hunt, he turned the throne over to Ciara, who does not want it. But she has been in charge and she has worked with the other magical creatures in the city on a spell. It’s called bona fide and it required all the creatures to swear loyalty to the Nether Court and the Gage family. It used drops of their blood to seal the vow and the witches were able to shield New Orleans from the Wild Hunt and the other courts. 

Lach finds out Channing is in a coma. Channing is the only one who knows who really took Cate. Lach’s like we need to wake him up now - call Baptiste. They all go to the hospital where Shaw has been keeping watch over Channing. Baptiste didn’t come but she sent another vampire, Dante. He bites Channing and then gives Channing his blood. Vampire blood is healing so it wakes Channing up. Channing wakes up and tells them it was Oberon. Lach wants to nip there immediately but Rorak stops him. Then Ciara realizes she has a voice mail. She glamours Lach and Roark nips him to Dublin because if Lach nips himself, the Wild Hunt will know. Lach finds Cate, in the pub, hiding from the Wild Hunt. He walks up behind her, grabs her around the waist, and is like you come here often? Then kisses her. They need to get away from the pub and the guards but Lach’s glamour is fading. They get into a group of drunks and get outside. They manage to get a few blocks away and then Lach nips them home. But it doesn’t go smoothly. While nipping, Cate feels herself being pulled away from Lach, she grabs onto him and thinks of the one place she always felt safe, a library in New Orleans, so they end up there. 

She’s like wtf happened. He said the Wild Hunt must have felt him nipping and tried to intercept but he doesn’t know how they ended up here. She says she thought of the library but she doesn’t know how she changed the course. They “reunite” (aka fked in a library) and then she tells Lach about the handfasting and how she is now married to Oberon. Lach says you aren’t married to him, you can’t be. She thinks he’s in denial and he’s like no, you can’t be married to him, because you’re married to me and he shows her his left hand where he has some new ink. Cate is like wtf are you talking about. He says remember the night we kinda tied each other up…well…the magic thought we were handfasting and it binded us. He tells her if she takes off her ring, she’ll see her own ink. She says she can’t take it off. She is so mad at him but also so horny. She’s like what is wrong with my emotions? Lach says oh … it's the mating bond. And she’s like the WHAT bond?!

He feels bad that he is springing all this on her but also he doesn’t want to lie to her anymore. He tells her the story that he has never told anyone. When his parents died and the throne became his, his dad left him a letter. As far as the public knew, Lach was heir to both the Nether and Terra court. His dad was the ruler of the Nether and his mom was Terra. (This is why two heirs are not supposed to get married so this situation doesn’t happen again.) So the other courts told him he needed to pick a court and he picked the Nether Court. Because the letter his dad left him explained to him that he is not the true heir of the Terra Court. The Terra Court existed with humans. They resided in the Axis Mundi which connected the Otherworld to our world. When it was lost, the fae magic changed. 

So how is Lach not the heir of the Terra court when his mom was the heir of it? Well…when his dad took the throne of the Nether Court he wanted to leave Britain. He wanted to go to the New World and he had visions of change. He decided to approach Terra Court. They kept to themselves and didn’t associate with the other courts. The heir went to meet with him and they fell in love. The issue? It wasn’t the real heir. The heir, Calista, had sent her penumbra, Stacia, to pretend to be her. Stacia fell in love with his dad. She told him the truth and he said he didn’t care, he would give up his court for her if necessary. Calista and Stacia decided to switch places. Why? Remember they want heirs to marry princesses…not penumbras. Stacia became Calista to the world and Calista became Stacia. Lach knew Stacia (the real Calista). They called her Aunt Stacia and one day she just left. They never knew what happened to her. Their mom (the fake Calista) wouldn’t talk about her. But their signet rings? One of them is on Cate’s finger. 

Lach says he knows they were supposed to meet. Something drew him out of the Avalon that night when she decided to approach. Yes the bargain, originally, was for Lach to get her ring. But then he fell in love with her and he didn’t want it anymore. That’s why he tried to help her break the bargain and ended up doing it for her. 

This is a lot of information for Cate. A lot that Lach has kept from her. They accidentally mated. It’s just a lot. So she is mad. 

They go back to the Avalon. Fiona and Romy are there. They are going to go to the Astral Court to work with Sirius to try and find a way out of the Memento Mori. Cate tells Romy that two witches helped her escape and they told her to find some witches who have the same tattoo. Romy says she can’t help, she has to leave, but go see her sister, Willow. 

All the magical creatures are mad because this bona fide spell is draining their magic. They had an eclipse, an outage, the other night which was unusual, their magic is acting weird. The vamps, witches, and werewolves are all pissed off. The vampire leader, Etienne, reminds all of them that they wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for the Gage family. The Gage family offered them sanctuary and access to magic when no one else wanted to help them. But there’s an issue: a rougarou was found in NOLA (Rougarou is a human turned werewolf) and there is a missing witch, Thalia. After the meeting, where nothing was really solved, Lach and Roark discuss how Lach can’t nip anymore. He can’t go to the Otherworld. The Wild Hunt will get him. Roark asks him if Cate knows what will happen if Lach doesn’t return to the Otherworld…does Cate know what will happen if she doesn’t? 

Cate and Ciara go to see Channing. Dante is there hanging out with him and Shaw. Channing and Cate talk but nothing is resolved and it feels awkward. On the way home, Cate tells Ciara about the mating bond. 

Roark, Lach, and Shaw go shooting. Shaw says Lach just can’t rely on Cate’s feelings to keep her around. He needs to apologize and romance her. Take her on a date or something. 

Another eclipse happens and then Lach’s men find Thalia. Dead. With the memento mori carved into her nape. The Wild Hunt didn’t get her but whoever killed her wants them to know it's because of Lach. Thalia is the one who suggested the bona fide spell and Roark thinks that's why she is dead. Lach wants to keep it quiet at first…he knows this will cause outrage and everything is already so rocky.

Lach talks to Cate and they make up (and out). 

The next day, she goes to see Willow. Willow tells her that her fear of knowing the truth is preventing her from taking off the ring. She wants Cate to come back on Samhain at midnight to perform a seance. She says Cate needs to talk to her Gran. Cate is like what's Samhain? And Willow says oh someone who was raised human would know it as Halloween. It isn’t until later that Cate is like wait…what did she mean by that?

Cate takes a bath and Lach comes in. Cate says she wants to do Halloween because she never has before. Lach says ok, we will go trick or treating (he is totally taking Shaw’s advice and using this as a date). When they hook up again, Cate can feel the mating bond.

Roark gets notified about another body. This one is in a cemetery and it’s human. She has the same mark in her nape as Thalia. Shaw and Dante were the ones who found her. Shaw was doing patrols. Dante came to hang out. They got high. Then during the eclipse they saw this orb of light and followed it to the body. Lach asks Dante to compel all the guards to forget what they saw. He still wants to keep these murders on the downlow.

Cate and Ciara go costume shopping and pick out a couples costume for her and Lach. Channing is out of the hospital and Lach says he can stay at the Avalon, in Shaw’s wing. On Halloween, they go trick or treating as Beauty and the Beast. They go to the Second Parish to get candy and run into Etienne. Lach is like what are you doing here? This isn’t your parish. He says visiting a friend and invites them to Danse Macabre. Lach doesn’t want to go but Cate does…so they go. 

At the party, Cate meets Baptiste. Lach urges her to stay away from Baptiste. They were together centuries ago, but that’s not why, he just has an uneasy feeling about her. Baptiste asks Cate for lunch and Cate says sure, but Ciara is coming too. 

Etienne finds them and is happy they attended. He leads them to a back room to watch the show…it’s basically another orgy. They end up fucking backstage..and Lach can feel his time running out. He knows he can’t hide from the Wild Hunt forever. Ciara and Roark show up. Roark has news about the human body, it was a tourist. The guys go outside and the girls go to the bathroom. Shaw, Channing, and Dante show up. Lach is annoyed that they are there. Roark tells Lach he is too hard on Shaw. Lach thinks he’s doing the right thing. He wants Shaw to hate him so when Lach is gone, it won’t be hard on him. 

A fight breaks out inside. Channing was picking a fight with a witch, Cate goes to help and another witch picks her up. She says put me down, you don’t know who you’re fucking with, he says “I can see what you truly are. Change-” then Lach appears. He threatens to kill the witch who touched Cate but Cate says no. So he breaks his fingers instead. Shaw and Lach argue…again. Dante tries to be a peacemaker but it doesn’t work. Cate needs to go to the seance so she leaves Lach to deal with this mess. 

At the senance, she sees Gran. Gran says she is worried about Channing, he isn’t hanging out with great people. Gran says there is much to tell her, but even in death, she is bound by ancient rules. She wants Cate to look at her foster care file. Cate didn’t end up with Gran by accident. Gran sees someone and fades away. Goeman shows up, has a warning for Lach. His time is running out. The Cabal moves against him. Lach needs to seek alliances with other courts. 

Willow asks her if she got any answers and she said nope. Willow says maybe you need to see an alchemist, Cate says she might know one. 

Lach meets Cate outside of the shop. They are walking and talking and then another eclipse happens. They see an orb of light, they follow it, and find another body. This one is strung up, with its heart removed, a mark on his nape - its Etienne. 

Shaw and his friends arrive. Lach asks him to take Cate back to the Otherworld, she’s like not without you, he says then just go back to the Avalon please. He kinda snaps at her and she gets pissed and leaves. Shaw gets mad at Lach and says you just won’t stop until we all hate you will you?Baptiste shows up. Etienne was like her dad and she is super pissed. Finds out there were other murders and yells at Lachlan. Lach nips away to the edge of the boundary, and Goeman shows up. Tells Lach he has enemies within NOLA. Lach is like why don’t you just kill me. He says your death would be less purposeful than your life. He says Lach already has what he needs and he knows it. Then he says he kept the rest of the Wild Hunt away and this will be Lach’s final warning. 

The next morning, Cate is still pissed. Lach is still gone, not answering his phone. Ciara and Shaw come home. Willow shows up. Cate and her call Sirius. She shows him the ring but doesn’t tell him exactly what it is. He doesn’t appear to know what it is but he does stare at it for a minute. Fiona sees Cate on the phone with Sirius, and she calls Lach to tell him. Lach comes home. Him and Cate fight. Again.

A week later, everyone is still mad at Lach. He goes to Baptiste’s restaurant. She says she caught the killer, if he would have just told everyone earlier, but they could have saved some lives. It was her little vampire boy-toy, Caleb. He says he hates Lach and the Fae. He wanted to break the bona fides and for Lach to be killed. Baptiste gives Lach a wooden stake and tells him to end it. Then she gives him relationship advice and tells him not to fuck this up.

Lach gets a note to Cate telling her to meet him for dinner. She considers not going but goes anyways. He made them dinner. He drops to his knees to ask for her forgiveness. It works. They make up and he tells her they caught the murderer. He wishes they had longer together, that they had forever. She knows she is ready and takes her ring off. Nothing happens. She cries, and feels like she disappointed him. He says never, he only wanted her to be Fae so they had forever together. Then he drops to just one knee, and asks her to marry him. She says yes, of course.

The next morning, Shaw, Ciara, and Rorak show up. Lach had texted them the night before asking them to come over. He wanted to tell them about the engagement. Ciara immediately wants to go dress shopping and they go that day. 

While dress shopping, Cate doesn’t feel good. She goes to the bathroom and starts her period. She asks Ciara to get a tampon out of her purse. She can’t find one and Cate remembers this isn’t her purse, but it's the one Lach summoned for her that has a gun in it. Ciara says she found a hidden pocket and she found a weird ugly little doll. Cate doesn’t know what she is talking about but tells her it sounds like an effigy. Willow told her about them. They are used for spell casting. Ciara messes with it and when Cate walks out of the stall - she has fae ears. 

Ciara starts screaming, pulls a gun on Cate. Cate’s like dude you saw me walk into the stall. They are both freaking out. Cate can now see the mating bond on her left hand. She also sees Theban (old Fae language) on her but it's not black ink like Lach’s. She also has 7 symbols over her heart which makes her cry for some reason. 

Ciara puts the effigy back together and Cate goes back to normal. Cate promises to tell Ciara everything she knows so they go to a bar together.

Back at the Avalon, Lach gets a message from Fiona saying they might have something, and she’ll be in touch. Then Willow shows up. She was doing some research and she knows there will be another murder. The first murder was the rougarou, but Lach wasn’t here for that one, and Roark never saw the body so they didn’t even think about it. So a werewolf, then witch, human, then vampire. One more will die - a Fae. She says eclipses happened with every murder that’s how she realized the rougarou was part of it because an eclipse happened then too. 5 murders - 5 locations - 5 points - a pentacle. She thinks someone is sending a message to Lach and he’s like yeah, whoever the Cabal is. If a Fae is murdered, the bona fide spell will fall. Lach tells Roark to take Willow to the Otherworld - she isn’t in trouble…exactly. But he doesn’t want anyone else finding out this information. She starts seizing and tells them that “Cate…my spell…I think she undid it.”

Lach sends Roark off to get the girls because they aren’t answering their phones and Rorak can’t reach Ciara through the signet ring (they wear it now since Lach is trying to give the throne to Ciara). Lach questions Willow. She says she put a protection spell that would help cloak her even if she took the ring off. She spoke with the witches who helped her escape (Oberon killed them). They told Willow they could see what Cate was even with her ring on. Lach’s like what is she? Willow says “An Icon”. 

A witch from the oldest bloodline mated with a fae. They were killed by the witches and the child disappeared. Willow thinks Cate is that child and that she can draw from multiple magics. Lach says when was this? She says about a 100 years ago but if Cate was kept in the Otherworld she would have aged slowly before coming to Earth. This would explain the no parents and the no memories of her childhood. Lach says he thinks she is the missing Terra Court princess. 

Ciara and Cate go to the Fontaine - Baptiste’s other restaurant. They are closed but Baptiste says Ciara and Cate can come in. Cate tells Ciara everything she knows. Ciara tells Cate that as long as they return to the Otherworld every day, then they stop aging. If not, they will age like humans. Cate’s like but…Lach can’t go to the Otherworld…

Baptiste comes over to the table and holds a gun to Ciara’s head. Baptiste says she is the one who killed all those people. Caleb only confessed because Baptiste told him to. Baptiste snuck yarrow into their wine so Ciara’s magic is muted but luckily, Cate’s glamour is still in place. Baptiste was killing because the bona fide spell used drops of blood from each species. The only way to break the spell is to kill someone from each species. She only has Fae left. Baptiste wants the ring but Cate doesn’t have it. She took it off and left it at Avalon. Baptiste doesn’t believe her and shoots Ciara in the leg. Cate wants to tell Baptiste that she is Fae so she will release Ciara but Ciara uses the last of her magic to silence Cate. 

Back at the Avalon, Willow helps Lach trace Cate by using their mating bond. He calls Roark and tells them where they are. Roark begs him to wait until he gets there before nipping. Willow tells him chaos would come. Lach says he has heard that before but doesn’t remember where. He said do only witches know about Icons? She says well…just like with any secret, you always tell someone. Lach watches Roark on a tracking device and once he gets to the restaurant, Lach nips there.

Back at the restaurant, Baptiste says they are waiting for the rest of the party to arrive. The witch from the party (that Lachlan broke his fingers) and Dante come in. Cate is pissed off at Dante…and then Channing walks in. Channing doesn't know what is going on and Cate tells him to leave. Baptiste tells Dante to bite Channing. Dante apologizes but does it anyways. He is draining him but Cate begs Baptiste to stop, she will get her the ring. Baptiste tells Dante to stop and give Channing his blood, which he does. 

Shaw walks in and Cate can tell by his face that he isn’t confused to be there like Channing. He is confused to see Ciara and Cate. Baptiste says aw now the Cabal is complete. Shaw says you weren’t supposed to involve my family. Baptiste is like what does it matter…you wanted to get rid of your brother, what’s the difference? Baptiste hands Shaw the gun and tells him to kill Cate. Channing lunges at Baptiste but the witch uses his magic to throw Channing to the side. Baptiste tells Dante to kill him. Dante looks conflicted because he has feelings for Channing but he snaps his neck anyways. But … Channing just had vampire blood. If you die after recently drinking vamp blood, you don’t die, you turn. 

Lach and Rorak walk in with Baptiste holding a gun to Cate’s head. Channing dead. Ciara shot in the leg. A random witch and Shaw. Lach is like wtf is going on. Cate undoes the thread on the effigy and her glamour disappears to show that she is Fae…and she has wings. Baptiste says she knew she was a Changeling. Lach begs Baptiste to kill him instead of Cate. Baptiste calls Oberon, says it won’t be long now, the entire Nether Court has shown up, so be ready to come when the wards fall, and bring Titania. Shaw is ready to make her his queen. Then she tells Dante to kill Cate. Dante says No. He shouldn’t be able to disobey a direct order but because he loves Channing he is able to. He says he won’t kill Channings sister. Roark lunges for Baptiste but she turns her gun on him. Ciara yells no (Lach just recently realized they have feelings for each other). Shaw yells no and raises his gun to Lach’s heart. Shaw says this was easier before Cate came around but regardless, he made a bargain with Oberon, he has to keep it. Lach says ok, let it be me not her. Shaw’s like you don’t get to be the hero this time and fires the gun…on himself. Ciara’s magic has returned, she uses her shadows to take out Baptiste. Roark shoots the witch. Dante drags Channing out. Cate and Lach rush to Shaw’s side but it’s already too late. 

Lach’s little brother just died, while turning on Lach and planning his death, but Lach is devastated. It's his fault that Shaw hated him. But he can't grieve. The wards are down. Cate begs him to leave before Oberon or the Hunt gets there. She can’t go but he says I will find you and then nips away.
