This is Book 3 in the series - Book 1 can be found here. Book 2 here.
It’s been three years since Jamie and Wes reunited. Jamie has applied to be Assistant Coach in the Junior League he coaches but he gets passed over for a new guy who is friends with the Head Coach. Jamie also had the Ottawa team reach out to him to see if he’d be interested in being one of their back up goalies due to injury. Jamie doesn’t really want to pursue that because being a backup goalie, sitting on the bench, is the whole reason he didn’t go to Detroit.
Jamie is pretty bummed about not getting a promotion, even though his boss tells him that they are looking for the perfect fit for him. Wes convinces him to travel with him to California for a game.
During warmups, Jamie is getting settled in his seats with his parents when he is called overhead. The San Jose coach asks him if he would suit up and play backup to their backup goalie because their starter is out. Jamie is on the emergency backup list for the league but its so rare for someone to get called. But luckily for San Jose, Jamie is in the building. Jamie surprises himself by saying yes.
So he’s going to play against Wes. And Blake. And the rest of the team that has become like a family to him.
No one on the Toronto bench is even paying attention to the San Jose bench. During an intermission, Jamie is in the locker room and takes a selfie to send to Wes. One of the players finally notices him and who he is and says that if he gets on the ice he will throw the game to Wes. Jamie tells them all that he loves to win against Wes and he’s been doing one-on-one competitions since they were kids - he knows how to beat him. But Jamie thinks it doesn't matter because the back-up goalie is playing amazing.
During 3rd period though, the back-up goalie gets hurt and Jamie has to go in to finish the game. He blocks every single shot Toronto tries and Toronto ends up losing the game.
The San Jose team takes Jamie out for drinks and invites Toronto out with them.
Wes is so freaking proud of him and spends all evening planning their lives for when he stays in Toronto but Jamie goes to Ottawa because he is convinced that Jamie will sign with a team now.
On the way back to the hotel Wes tells Jamie all about his plans but Jamie tells him he doesn’t want to go play in Ottawa. Or anywhere. He wants to continue coaching.
A few days later he is back with his team at practice. His boss wants to talk to him after. He tells him that he knows Jamie is upset about not getting promoted but that's because he has bigger plans for him.
Jamie gets promoted to Head Coach of the Mississauga team (which is only 20 minutes away). He will be the youngest Head Coach of a CHL team ever. They’re just getting to celebrate when Blake pounds on the door and then remembers he has a key and lets himself in. He has a photo printed out and framed for them. It's of Jamie blocking Wes’ shot during the San Jose game.
