Maggie gets gifted a tracking spell from Maestro and implies she will hunt Carl down and kill him and Donut.
Odette - Host of “Dungeon Crawler After Hours with Odette”. Used to be a crawler, was human-ish until she lost her legs in a battle. Now she uses crab legs to get around on her show or a little moving platform. Wears a weird get up for her show, Carl describes her as a “naked crab-taur wearing a bug mask”. Was Mordecai’s trainer when he was in the Dungeon. Appears to be on Carl and Donut’s side.
Zev - Carl and Donut’s PR agent. Works for the Borant corp but is on Carl and Donut’s side. Donut and her bond over Gossip Girl and other TV shows.

Marked for Death Skill - You can mark a Crawler (or any non NPC on certain floors) for death. They arrive on the 4th floor in a moving train/subway car. Donut picks Football Hooligan as her new class. Mordecai tells them that it appears that when she gets a new skill with every class, as long as she levels up at least once, she will get to keep that skill. So on the last floor, she had Artist Alley class and she had a level 5 Negotiation skill that came with. She leveled it up to 7. Now, she retains that skill, but only as a 2.
With this class, she gets a skill called Mascot. Whenever Mongo injures an enemy, everyone in the party gets a bonus to dexterity and constitution. If he kills a mob, the bonus lasts a few hours. Mordecai wants her to use Mongo as much as possible to level this skill so she will be able to keep on the next floor.
This level is kind of confusing because there are a ton of trains. They are all named by colors and numbers and they don’t seem to make any sense. The author tells us to not worry about it, we don’t really need to understand it to enjoy the book, and he provides a map near the end where it matters more. So I’m not going to go into a lot of detail with that.
Most importantly - Saferooms are at every stop. Stairwells are at stations 12,24, 36. 48, 72 on any colored line.
At the end of the last floor, the Borant got pissed off and wouldn’t let the AI give anyone in the Quest their boxes (except for one managed to open their box before getting it taken away - Quan Ch). So the AI retaliated and gave a “Platinum It’s Not My Fault You Fish-Headed Assholes Don’t Properly Program Your Quests Box”. The AI gave everyone who got screwed over 4 coupons - free personal space with an upgrade, free tier one environmental upgrade, free tier one crafting table, and coupon for a table upgrade. Mordecai says this is a big Fuck You to Borant because all of these upgrades are really expensive and everyone is getting them for free, which is screwing Borant out of a lot of money.
Mordecai has them turn in all three personal space coupons and join them together. He gets them all an upgraded bed where they only have to sleep for 2 hours at a time but they feel like they’ve slept a full night. They also got an Enchanted Crafting Studio, a Training Room (where they can train their skills and level up), and a Bomber’s Studio (where Carl can make bombs). Now every safe room they go into will have a door and that door will open up to their safe room. For example, if they aren’t together - maybe Carl went to go cause some shit in another town and Katia stayed where they were - every time he goes into a safe room and she goes in one, they will be together. Also, Mordecai gets his own space inside as well.
Even though they all have their own room, Donut insists that Carl sleep in her room with Mongo.
Mordecai asks Carl to try and connect with the other crawlers he knows via chat so they can try and figure out the layout of this floor. Carl opens up his chat to talk with Brandon (one of the caretakers from MeadowLark) only to find the message, “Messages from decreased Crawlers”. Brandon was with a resident of Meadow Lark who was holding the line so that others could make it to the staircase on the last floor. He wanted to let Carl know what was going on and also for Carl to pass along a message. He said that him and his brother, Chris, got into a fight and Chris left the party. He doesn’t know where he is or what's going on, only that Chris is still alive. He wants Carl to tell Chris that he is sorry and that he loves him.
Carl takes this loss pretty hard. Brandon was his friend and this goddamn place just killed him. Carl repeats his mantra, “You will not break me. Fuck you all. You will not break me,” and goes to train in their new training room.
Carl, Donut, Katia, and Mongo spend some time leveling up and learning new formations together as a team for more efficient fighting.
They talk to a train conductor who tells them that everyone has to get off on the last stop, stop 435. Carl remembers seeing that one of the trains, Nightmare Express, goes to stop 436. The conductor says that he doesn’t know what is past 435. He knows he pulls into there, everything gets fuzzy, and suddenly he’s at station 10 again and he just gets back on the train and does it all over again. He also tells them that the mobs get off every 5 stops and they are always pretty happy about it. They find out while going around killing everything that all the mobs are on some type of drug.
Carl gets a fan box and they send him “A Prize Carousel”. Out comes this guy, Chaco the Bard, to host some mini game show. Mordecai goes ape shit and tries to attack him. But …. They are in the safe room. Mordecai gets put in “time out” for 7 days. Which Carl is super worried about because they have been used to relying on Mordecai’s knowledge and advice. Chaco won’t tell Carl why Mordecai hates him. He says he figured Moredcai would be gone by now or at least gotten over it. He tells Carl to tell him “If I hadn’t done it, he’d have died. And then we would have all lost her. We’d have lost Odette. When he comes back, tell him I said I’m sorry. Not a day goes by where I don’t regret it.” They get a notification from AI telling them this isn’t Dr. Phil and to get on with the prizes.
So there’s a carousel and Carl gets to pick his own based on a very general description.
Prize 1: 2 potions that he doesn’t get to know what they are; Prize 2: 500 bombs; Prize 3: 2000 Earth books; Prize 4: 1965 Harley Motorcycle….that just happens to be Carl’s dad’s. And we find out that Carl’s dad was an abusive asshole; Prize 5: 1 book that says, “Best Laid Traps”; Prize 6: Another book with a symbol for anarchy on it; Prize 7: Enchanted chaps; Prize 8: A single potion; Prize 9: A Craftsman tool chest - that was Carl’s from the shop he worked at.
He considers taking the tool chest but realizes it’s empty. He ends up going with his gut and picking the anarchy book. Also known as: The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook. On their next trip to Desperado Club, to meet up with Elle and Imani, Carl decides they need security so he purchases two security guards, Bomo and “The Sledge” (or as Donut calls him Sledgie).
Imani tells Carl more about what happened between Chris and Brandon. Shortly after they picked their races, Chris wanted to go meet up with Carl. Kept telling Brandon that he knew where Carl was, but how? Brandon and him got into a fight and Carl left with some of their party. While Imani, Elle, and Carl are talking, Donut wants to go dancing so Bomo and Sledgie take her. But they were attacked by another crawler who knocked out the two bodyguards and Donut’s was injured so badly her Cockroach skill activated again. The Crawler was laying on the ground, bleeding, and then a skull appeared over Donut’s name - meaning she killed another Crawler. Donut tells Carl a woman was there too, Carl doesn’t see anyone at first, but then someone starts to rush them. Only to be killed by Elle.
Management comes over and apologizes. She offers to refund them what they paid for the bodyguards and that they will be handled. Carl asks for the bodyguards to not be harmed but they would like the two of them to be their personal bodyguards every time they come to the club.
Other doors inside the club open into the Hunting Grounds (the next floor) and Larracos - capital city (on the 9th floor).
Katia works on transforming herself into other people. Carl also gets a bunch of armor and makes Katia a backpack with it. She can put the backpack on, absorb it into her body to give herself more mass. If she doesn’t need it, she can take the backpack off and put it in her inventory. So she always has extra mass available. It takes her awhile but she eventually learns how to do it and can transform herself very quickly and easily.
Carl wants to get into the engineer room of the train but the only way to get in is to get the NPC engineer to come out. So they decide to derail a train. The engineer tells them that there is a gate, called abyss, after stop 435 and he drives into it. He is magically transported to the depot but all the other train cars are gone. He says the other cars get deep cleaned, but his car never gets cleaned. Carl believes that if they ride into the abyss gate while in the engineer car, they will be fine. But the NPC says that no one is allowed in that room and they only come out if there’s damage to their car, like the train wrecking. They end up having to fight this NPC and they get the “Ochre Line Engineer’s Key.”
Carl gets his first sponsor - Valtay Corporation (the ones trying to invade the Borant system). Donut gets Princess D’nadia of the Prism Kingdom. Katia gets Princess Formidable of the Skull Empire (Prince Maestro’s sister).
Elle and Imani have been finding out about the mobs on this floor. Every five stops, the mobs get off the train and proceed into some tunnels where they are given drugs. If they don’t get their fix, they go through withdrawals, and this isn’t good for anyone.
Carl gets his first Valtay box, and gets a pill that enables him to be able to see through doorways.
Carl meets Elle and Imani at the Desperado Club. He asks every single Crawler in the building to fist bump with him - this makes it so he can chat with every single person. Carl would like to be able to communicate with as many Crawlers as he can.
Carl and Donut hijack the Nightmare Express train where they meet Fire Brandy. She keeps the boiler going. She also helps Carl drive the train when he clearly doesn’t know how. He makes it to the Abyss Station - basically a big train yard. He realizes there are a few different ways to get through to Abyss. If you have an engineer key or the hat they everyone got when they got onto the floor.
Carl sends a message to every crawler he knows and explains it to them. The stairways are at stations 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72. But everyone started off at station 80 and there’s no trains to backtrack. If you wear the hat you got when you arrived, you can ride the train to Abyss and you’ll be transported through without dying. Or you can get a train, kill the engineer, take their key, and then you’ll get through.
Some random facts:
-Donut gets her first box from Princess D-Nadia - unique, made especially for Donut, magical sunglasses. Also, upgrades her Magic Missile spell.
-They meet an NPC in the Abyss that tells them they just need to get on the Escape Velocity train because it goes to all the stairwells.
-One of the entries in Carl’s book says it’s necessary to break the NPC’s fourth wall so they realize their memories are fake.
-They meet another NPC, a human named Madison, who works for the train company, who tells them that Yard A is the train headquarters. Station 60 is where the employees stay. But when they arrive there, with Madison, there’s nothing there. She gets really confused because this should be a whole city where the train employees and their families live. She insists on getting out and staying there saying that someone will come.
-Carl remembers a conversation with Bea. Bea was planning on getting two more show kittens and returning Donut to her parents, who would sell her. Carl didn’t like this at all. He was planning on leaving Bea, and when he did, he was going to steal Donut.
Carl sees Frank at the Desperado Club. Frank is super drunk, says he hasn’t seen Maggie since the second floor. He is going to get his revenge on Carl by giving him a ring - Ring of Divine Suffering. It can grow your strength, but if you use it improperly, it will kill you. It is a very sought after ring. It also comes with the Marked for Death Skill - you can mark a Crawler (or any non NPC on certain floors) for death. Once you do, and they die, you receive a permanent +1 stat point to whatever that crawler’s current highest stat is. (please see above for full description of both the ring and the skill). Carl takes the ring but tells himself he will never use it.
Carl and Donut are zapped away to go do a TV program that Zev has booked for them and when they are done, Donut gets a message from Sledgie. He tells her that Chris (Brandon’s brother) was talking to Frank in the club and killed him. Carl gets a message from Bautista telling him that over 150 Crawlers (including him) are stranded and are going to try and walk to the next train station.
When they get back, Helka and all her crew are in their private space. Helka has come to collect Katia. She also asked Carl and Donut for help collecting some other friends who have been stranded at a station. She said there are about 1000 Crawlers at this one station who are stranded. Carl doesn’t trust Helka after Odette had told him that Helka wants Donut (and only Donut) on her team. But he can’t deny helping, it will make him look like a coward. And he also feels a sense of duty to try and save as many Crawlers as he can.
Katia wants to make herself into like a plow and put herself on the front of the train to get rid of any mobs that might be in their way. Carl doesn’t like this idea at all because he doesn’t want Katia to get hurt but she tells him that he just doesn’t like it because it wasn’t his idea.
Carl, Donut, Helka, Eva, and Silfa (a Holistic Healer) ride in the engineer car of the train.
As they are speeding down the track, Katia’s health starts plummeting. The Healer isn’t doing shit so Carl starts using his Heal scrolls on her. They get through the first mob but when they hit the second mob, Silfa isn’t healing Katia again. Donut said she left and went into another compartment. Carl doesn’t understand why Katia’s health keeps dropping so quickly. Then Donut tells him that she just watched Helka shoot Katia with an invisible arrow. She was able to see it with her new sunglasses. Carl yells at Katia to disengage from the front of the train. Helka and Eva are too busy killing ghouls that have gotten into the train to notice. Carl pulls the invisible arrows out of Katia and heals her. He tells Donut to remain calm…..which of course she doesnt. She shoots Helka in the face with her magic missiles. Helka is telling Donut to calm down, she clearly made a mistake. Donut is having none of it. She is screaming at Helka that she told Katia she loved her, she made her feel special and loved, but all she wanted to do was trade her in (I didn’t realize until I re-read but this makes more sense in book 6). Katia is awake now but confused - one of the side effects of Helka’s bolts. Helka just wants to leave but Katia is trying to figure out what is going on. Eva starts mocking her. Katia loses her shit, activates a spell called Rush (which turns her into a battering ram but she doesn’t have any control over how fast, how far, or in which direction she moves). She was aiming at Eva but hit Helka instead.
All hell breaks loose. The other Daughters rush in, Eva starts attacking and screaming at Katia. Donut uses her Second Chance, activating Helka’s body, then uses Clockwork Triplicate making more of her. While all of this was going on, they had stopped at the station and all 1000 Crawlers got on. Katia, Donut, and Carl shut themselves in the engineer room while a couple Crawlers banged on the door. Donut tells Carl someone was hiding in there - Silfa the Healer. The two banging on the door are her daughters.
Carl guesses, and Silfa reluctantly agrees, that Helka wanted Silfa to not heal Katia, so Carl would get mad at Silfa and try to attack her. If that happened, her daughters were supposed to kill Carl. Then with Carl and Katia gone, Helka assumed Donut (and Mordecai) would join her party. Donut says she would have never joined Helka’s party if Carl was gone. Carl tells Silfa to go out to her daughters because he doesn’t want to hurt her or them.
Li Jun comes into the engineer room, Carl tells him how to drive the train. He is going to detach one of the cars. Li Jun can take this car with 1000 people to station 36 where Elle and Imani were at. He was going to take the other train car and go get Bautista.
Zev shows up while they’re in the safe room. She says that she has enjoyed working with them but Loita, Katia’s rep, wants them and she has more of a claim. Loita is also Bloom (the kua-tin political party that runs Borant) and Zev is not. Zev seems really down and she says that something is happening back at home but she can’t really talk about it.
Before she leaves, she says oh and now people can now pay to read your chats.
They leave the safe room and talk to an NPC (Growler Gary) that’s in the bar. Gary is drunk and talks about himself in the third person but he tells them that they need to take a certain car, dial the line you want, and it goes there. It also runs on batteries. Unfortunately (for Gary), the carts can only be run by two gnolls. Also, unfortunately for Gary, he respawns every time he dies. Carl, Donut, and Mongo have to kill him multiple times to get enough of his hands to run 10 cars. They were going to send a rapid-response car first - it would go through the tracks, cleaning anything on the tracks, including mobs, and throwing it in the abyss. Then they would send another car down to pick up the crawlers and transport them to a train station. They had multiple lines they needed to do this with, hence, all the hands. It worked for every line, except Bautista’s, so they load up another car, and go with it to collect him.
Remember the hats that could also open a portal? Well most people sold them for money. Carl had collected a whole bunch from the last group he rescued and he used them to help get Bautista (along with the 600 people with him) to a different station.
Bautista tells Carl that the beanie babies they looted from Miss Quill’s office on the last floor are actually alive if you pulled their tag. He says once you pull their tag, they fight for you, and they’re pretty strong. They usually only last 15-30 seconds unless you have a super rare one.
Carl and gang leave Bautista and decide to go meet up with Elle and Imani. But first they stop at a safe room to shower and sleep.
Mordecai finally comes back. He tells Carl he needs to take that ring off (the one Frank gave him) right now. When Carl gets to the 6th floor, hunters will be there, and they always go after the people who have these rings to kill them first.
Mordecai goes on a very complicated explanation of the floor and how it works but to be honest, it confused me, and I didn't have to understand it to enjoy the rest of the book (if you want to read it - its chapter 30). Basically it’s Borant calling other people racist. Also, the floor is like a piece of paper folded on itself. So if you dig far enough, you’ll come to another train station but this one will be upside down (or you’re upside down). And Carl and Katia realize there is an empty chamber in between the two levels. Carl is very lucky he has Katia because she understands the train lines better than he does.
Carl comes up with another Carl-like plan. He gets another train car, and with the help of other Crawlers, he hangs it from the top of the room that has the stairway in it. He turned the train on and set the portal to the abyss.
When there was just 24 hours left, the floors started opening in the middle of the station and mobs from the flip side started coming in. Carl's idea worked and all the monsters that poured in went straight into the portal to the abyss.
Carl has another idea - if he kills one of the big big bosses (a mimic), it will set off a soul crystal, and kill a lot of the mobs. This will help everyone who got pushed out of the stations with stairways to get back in there.
Donut looks into the hole that the monsters are coming from and hits the mimic with a magic missile. It detaches and falls into the portal going to the abyss (don’t question me too much, I think that’s what happened, it was a little confusing). Then they hear someone yelling at them from the same hole. It’s two other crawlers, Prepotente (Pony) and Miriam Dom. Pony is pissed that they took his prey and threatens to kill them so Miriam smacks him with her staff and tells him to apologize.
Carl gets another bright idea to summon the god, Grull. Mordecai tells him to absolutely not do this. So of course he does.
Carl wants to summon him so he can kill the mimic since the mimic is way too strong for any of them to take care of. He has a multiple step plan that involves summoning Grull twice but always portaling him away. Unfortunately, Carl didn’t think of everything. The mantaur that he beat to summon the god, had a hold of Carl’s numb foot, and when he went into the portal, so did Carl.
So then Carl is in the abyss with a Level 90 Mimic boss aaannnnnddddd he summoned the god Grull. And guess what?! Sponsors can sometimes inhabit the bodies of gods. And Prince Maestro (who isn’t dead - Surprise!) is hitching a ride. Oh and the god….he’s invincible. And a level 250. Carl is super fucked. Or as the AI says, “I hope you said your prayers and brought the lube, because you about to get fucked from here to eternity.”
Donut is chatting with Carl telling him she is on her way. Carl tells her to go back to Imani and to not come get him. Carl starts getting his ass whooped by Grull but he takes Mordecai’s Special Brew (a healing potion mixed with a regenerative potion. Heals you continuously for 30 seconds. You cannot take another potion for 10 hours).
But Carl has spent this whole book…really this series…trying to save as many humans as he can and they don’t leave him. Elle comes in shooting Grull with her icicles. Katia changed into Carl to distract everyone in the area. Li Na, Li Jun, Donut, and Mongo used a train car to transport them down to him. They also brought the mantaur and Carl went ahead with the original plan - beat this one, summon Grull again, and send them through the portal.
They still need to blow one more soul crystal. They decide to use the train that they’ve been using, the Nightmare, and send it with some explosives into a portal. Fire Brandy is in there, with a dwarf, Tizquick, and they tell Carl they will drive the train down. Carl tells them that they will die. They know. But they also have remembered other variations of themselves and they don’t want to do this anymore. They’re hoping they stay dead.
Once it explodes, everyone is able to get back into the stations with stairways. Imani waits at the stairway for everyone to come back. Before Imani can go down the stairs, they hear a squeaking shopping cart and Agatha appears. Imani is shocked but Carl tells her not to say anything, he’ll talk to her later.
They get a notification from Loita saying she will be waiting for them in Odette’s green room, not Zev.
Loita says Zev had a “personal tragedy” back at home and she has been sent away on a “retreat so she may reflect upon her life and her personal philosophies.” Aka she got in trouble, they punished her by killing her family, and then sent her away to get more training. Loita is there to make sure Odette doesn’t pass Carl any information which pisses off Odette and Carl.
After the show, they get transported into a room with two spinning wheels. It says they must spin the wheel to pick their quadrant. There is Land, Sea, Air, and Subterranean. They get Air. Then they spin to see who their opponent will be and they land on Dirigible Gnome Wasteland Fortress.
